Fade in. An American flag gently sways in a soft breeze. Two and a half hours later the same image appears.
The film is "Saving Private Ryan", Steven Spielberg's first directorial since "Schindler's List." The film follows a group of soldiers, led by Officer Miller (Tom Hanks), during World War Two and deals with the horrific experiences they have. One particular scene is during the beach raid at Normandy. The scene is extremely graphic but Spielberg claims that it was necessary to achieve the devastation and brutality caused by the war.
The film co-stars Edward Burns, an accomplished independent filmmaker, as well as Matt Damon who is fresh off the success of "Good Will Hunting." These two actors contribute a great deal to the film. One of the film's most prominent scenes is when the troops take a rest in an abandoned church and Miller begins reminiscing about former soldiers under his command. He begins to tell that the loss of 10 of his soldiers could save 40 or 50 more lives. The moment is exceptionally strong and deals with the value of life.
"Saving Private Ryan" looks promising for the Oscars. Just recently, Spielberg won "Best Director" at the Golden Globes and Tom Hanks is sure to be nominated for his tear jerking performance. The movie is a great addition to an already spectacular resume and will most definitely go for "Best Picture"!
